Christopher Aldgate

Associate

A senior multidisciplinary exhibition and production designer with extensive experience in the UK and internationally, Christopher’s career has been defined by his creative leadership of complex commissioned artworks, as well as comprehensive contemporary and art historical exhibitions in public institutions.

With over 25 years of experience—including 10 years as Head of Exhibition Design and Production at Whitechapel Gallery—Christopher continues to collaborate with leading contemporary artists, renowned curators, and directors, as well as national and international museums, archives, and collections. He has successfully produced over 300 acclaimed commissions, exhibitions, and performances.

As Gallery Director at Gathering—a dynamic contemporary gallery established in 2022 across London, Spain, and Germany—he played a key role in shaping its foundation and advancing its mission to provide artists with a commercial platform while supporting their ambitions to create institution-level installations. A skilled and empathetic artist liaison, he has designed exhibitions for amongst many other, Theaster Gates, and Turner Prize winner Laure Prouvost, as well as exhibitions in partnership with Centre Pompidou (Paris), Concrete (Dubai), and The Long Museum (Shanghai).

As an intuitive professional, Christopher possesses a rare ability to bridge the full spectrum of considerations, from building and platform development to project rationale and conceptualisation, as well as design and realisation. With a comprehensive understanding of the requirements for conservation-sensitive public engagement platforms, he was a key contributor to the Whitechapel Gallery capital expansion and has provided consultancy for many other public institutions.

Christopher has actively promoted audience development and student engagement. He has mentored for the Hanwha Foundation Culture Residency and The Arts Society, supported charitable initiatives such as Art on a Postcard and the Mosaic Art Awards, and fostered learning partnerships with UCL and Open School East.
