Counterculture Partnership LLP is delighted to announce that leading corporate communications professional, Vanessa Elliott, will be joining the company as a Partner.

Vanessa has over two decades of experience in the creative industries, having worked as a journalist, arts producer, and senior head of corporate communications. She joins Counterculture following 12 years as Head of Public Affairs at the BBC, leading the broadcaster’s engagement with parliamentarians and political stakeholders during major moments such as the Media Act 2024, the 2017 Royal Charter Renewal, and the 2014 transition of World Service funding from government to Licence Fee payers.

Prior to her work in corporate communications, Vanessa spent 15 years as a journalist, producer, and filmmaker—working across BBC regions, Radio 5 Live Breakfast, Live Political Programmes, Newsround, and BBC Arts. This experience helped her build extensive networks across the creative industries, sport, and education.

Looking forward to her new role, Vanessa Elliott commented:

“After an exciting and diverse career at the BBC, I am thrilled to be joining the phenomenal team at Counterculture working with some of the best, most experienced culture and arts professionals in the creative industries. I look forward to bringing my expertise, experience and enthusiasm to my partnership role, working on a wide range of projects across the industry, the UK and internationally.”

Counterculture Chair, John Newbigin OBE, welcomed Vanessa’s appointment as follows:

“With her years of experience in some of the most sensitive and high profile roles in public service media, Vanessa has an unparalleled understanding of the complex interactions between public policy and the world of culture.  Her skills and wisdom will be a powerful and welcome addition to Counterculture’s already formidable range of expertise.”

Further information about Vanessa Elliott:

An expert in campaign and change management within a regulatory framework (Ofcom), Vanessa has delivered significant legislative successes related to journalistic protections, sports rights, and public service media. She was a core member of BBC Westminster and pan-BBC diversity working groups, contributing to internal policy changes and the setting of on- and off-screen diversity targets.

Vanessa advised BBC commercial subsidiaries and senior executives on appearances before select committees, receptions, and conferences. A skilled written and oral communicator, she has drafted submissions for numerous parliamentary inquiries—covering areas such as film, high-end TV, children’s content, media literacy, and AI. She has also represented the BBC at a wide range of political and creative industry events. Her expertise spans stakeholder engagement, strategic messaging, and crisis communications across diverse briefs—from multi-platform content and education to music and live events (e.g., The Proms, Radio 1’s Big Weekend, East Bank).

In 2025, Vanessa was accepted as a full BAFTA member. She served as a trustee for a music charity from 2018 to 2025 and is currently completing a PhD at the University of Westminster’s Communication and Media Research Unit. She brings a rare combination of industry insight, strategic leadership, and project management experience, along with a proactive and supportive approach. As a seasoned team leader, former HR hearing manager, and mentor, Vanessa is a collaborative, creative thinker who champions innovation and inclusion.
