Gasworks is a contemporary art organisation based in South London, made up of exhibition and events space, artists’ studios, and participation programmes and artists’ residencies. Gasworks is one of the Arts Council’s National Portfolio Organisations. It is also part of the Triangle Network – an international network of artists and arts organisations in more than 30 countries around the world, promoting dialogue, and the exchange of ideas and innovation in contemporary visual arts. Gasworks is the hub of the Triangle Network and both organisations provide opportunities for artists to develop their practice in relation to their peers on an international scale.
Objectives
To maintain high standards of operational management across both Gasworks and Triangle Network during the maternity leave of the Deputy Director – for an initial period of seven months, on a part-time basis, in 2012-2013.
Actions
Zoe McLeod was appointed temporary Deputy Director to cover the maternity leave of the post-holder. During her time at Gasworks and Triangle Network she was responsible for the successful operational management of both organisations – encompassing finance, HR, governance, visitor services, buildings operations, and the day-to-day management of seven staff. She also worked alongside the Director on the strategic direction of both organisations. She took particular responsibility for the successful performance of Gasworks as a National Portfolio Organisation, and a related upcoming capital campaign.
Results
The medium-term absence of the Deputy Director across two organisations was managed without disruption and their highly successful operations were maintained. Zoe worked strategically and collaboratively to ensure this – and also to plan and manage an upcoming capital campaign.
