Phil is an experienced charity chief executive who has held senior roles in the sector for 20 years. He has extensive experience in membership led charities, with high levels of volunteer involvement. Phil specialises in strategic business planning, commercial strategy and development, organisational development, and supporting Trustee Boards and leadership teams to develop and improve organisational effectiveness.
Prior to joining Counterculture first as an Associate and then as a Partner in 2014, Phil’s most recent role was as Chief Executive of the University of Salford Students’ Union where he took the organisation through several change management processes including downsizing and refocusing the Union’s commercial activities to remove unmanageable risks and turn around poor performing services into profitable outlets.
Phil has provided consultancy support across the third sector including interim management; supporting trustees through Chief Executive recruitment processes; facilitating strategic planning, trustee training and induction exercises; acting as an outsourced Director of Resources for three charities; and advising on staff structure realignment exercises. Outside of Students’ Union work, Phil was a non-executive Board Director of NUS Services Ltd, a national purchasing organisation for four years, has been a pension scheme trustee for 15 years and is Chair of a school governing body.
Phil has an MBA from the University of Bolton achieved with distinction. His final dissertation focussed on creating a performance management framework for members of Trustee Boards.
